Zune HD Tries To Cut The iPod's Massive Lead With Price Cuts

Microsoft’s 2% share in the mobile media player market is a fraction of Apple’s dominance which is measured at 70% of the market share. It also doesn’t look like the iPod’s popularity is going to wane anytime soon. What’s Microsoft to do? It looks like the Redmond company has reduced prices on its Zune HD models.

The 16GB Zune HD used to cost around $222 — now Amazon sells it at $190. The 32GB model also underwent a similar price cut, now costing around $250. Retailers like Wal-Mart are now closely matching their prices with these reduced levels.

The above price reductions weren’t overly publicized despite it being a part of a sales plan as Microsoft references it as. It’s been suggested that the price drop was temporary, but at this point, there’s no real word as to how long the low prices will remain.

Why the silence? One might guess it’s an attempt at boosting post-holiday sales and gaining some ground on the Apple iPod. Whatever it is, it’s likely a sign that while the Zune “reboot” may have been ineffective, it has a long ways to go before scoring a dent on the iPod’s dominance.
