Over the past year, we’ve seen many rumours that would indicate that Facebook would follow Apple and Google and develop their own phone. This phone was affectionately coined a Facebook phone and its launch seemed all but certain, especially when you hear about Facebook speaking about the importance of mobile computing.
In the recent Facebook earnings call, it would appear that all of these rumours have been put to rest, at least for now, with Zuckerberg himself saying that the social networking site has no interest in getting into the hardware business. This comment arose after analysts had specifically asked Zuckerberg as to what the company’s mobile strategy would be for the coming quarters. When you look at this comment at face value, it does seem to make sense. Currently, Facebook is one of the most popular apps on every mobile platform that exists, so what would be the purpose of creating their own hardware?
Still, these comments do go against some of the things that we’ve seen recently, such as Facebook and HTC partnering up to develop a phone. In addition to this, Facebook has also head hunted a few Apple employees whose expertise is in the phone business. It is very possible that Facebook will not make their own phone, but that’s not to say that they aren’t interested in ensuring that the platform that manufacturers use is up to their standards. For now though, no Facebook phone is on the horizon.
