If you have watched a YouTube video today then you have helped the video sharing site reach quite a milestone as YouTube now serves over 1 billion video views per day. It was only three years ago that the YouTube was purchased by Google (NSDQ:GOOG) for an estimated $1.65 billion.
What caused the site to be so successful? According to Chad Hurley, one of the co-founders of the site, success was due to the site loading and playing videos quickly as well as being hosted on an open platform. He added “We wanted to create a place where anyone with a video camera, a computer and an internet connection can share their life, art and voice with the world, and in many cases they can make a living from doing so.”
Currently, YouTube generates 12,000 views per second, making it the third largest website on the internet.
