The Internet can be a dynamic place where new innovations and technologies are being developed and introduced regularly. With the rapid change observed, all of the large players are continually releasing new versions of their Internet browsers that can correctly render web pages successfully.
From that standpoint, it only makes sense to perform browser updates as they become available. However there may be reasons why some refuse to upgrade their browser for whatever reason. Certain companies that haven’t tested all of their intranet web pages on modern browsers still cling to old browser technology.
Effective March 13th, Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) will be forcing the hands of many to upgrade to a newer browser as they have announced that from that date on, YouTube will no longer support Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 6. From that day onwards, visit YouTube with IE6 and you’ll be greeted with the message:
On March 13, we are dropping support for your browser. You’ll still be able to watch videos after that date, but new features may not work properly
Users will also be provided with alternatives for newer browser versions from the leading providers of browser technology. The options recommended include Firefox 3.6, Google Chrome 4, Internet Explorer 8, Safari 4, and Opera 10.
The changes being implemented are not a surprise as Google did advise Internet users that change was coming, with many believing that the reason for the change had to do with Chinese hackers using a security vulnerability in IE6 to attack the search engine giant.
IE6 is not the only old browser being singled out by Google as support for older versions of Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Mozilla Firefox will also be ending.
