Years ago, GeoCities was the third largest website on the internet, with millions of personal users. The appeal of the site came from the fact that they offered a free website hosting service, no strings attached. The service was popular, especially amongst newbies who were looking to put up a personal website but had limited knowledge of FTP servers or HTML coding. One of the more popular features of Geocities amongst it’s users (or homesteaders) was the presence of themed cities such as “WallStreet” which hosted financial sites or “Silicon Valley” which hosted technology sites.
Yahoo had purchased GeoCities for $3.57 billion and as of today, the site will no longer be accessible, bringing an end to an era. However, all may not be lost because over the years, the Internet Archive has been actively archiving personal sites hosted on Geocities.
