Windows Phone 7 form factors can be broken down into two categories, Chassis 1 and Chassis 2. The current test devices that we’re seeing would be considered as Chassis 1 which means that they have a large display screen that covers the face of the handset and there are a trio of physical buttons that are positioned below the screen. Some of the other characteristics of this design include an optional slide out QWERTY physical keyboard like the LG C900 and the LG GW910.
Although a fair amount has been known about Chassis 1, less was known about the second form factor, Chassis 2. However, new information reveals that this form factor will come a display screen that sports a 480×320 pixel resolution which means that less room is available for a front QWERTY keyboard. Hence, Chassis 2 will be more of a ‘Blackberry’ style smartphone. At launch, Microsoft anticipates that the majority of WP7 phones will be of the Chassis 1 variety with the large touchscreen displays with Chassis 2 form factor phones to show up some time down the road.
There is also a third form factor WP7 phone that will come on the market. Officially, not much has been revealed about Chassis 3 but we will learn more with time.
