Worm Hits Jailbroken iPhones

Rick Astley Virus

This may be another reason to stick to Apple and keep your iPhone un-jailbroken. The first ever iPhone worm came out last weekend and infected a host of jailbroken iPhones all over the world, treating users to the horror of staring into the eyes of Rick Astley. Looks like Australian hacker Ikee Rick rolled quite a few people over the weekend.

The work exploits a security hole in the iPhone, left wide open by jailbreaking software installed by its users. Apparently jailbroken iPhones have SSH access, which lets users access the phone’s file system through the default password “alpine.” Of course, this isn’t Apple’s fault — but jailbreakers will have to be a little more careful with the software they’re installing on their iPhones.

Surprisingly, Ikee actually wasn’t aware that the worm had become so widespread until recently. He had initially planned to only infect a few iPhones. I guess this simply shows how malevolent viruses and worms can be — sometimes much worse than what their creators originally planned them to be.

Here’s a tip — if you want to jailbreak your iPhone in one of the more conventional ways, the first thing you’ll need to do is to change the root password. But keep an eye out for other iPhone worms that may be created in the near future, now that hackers know jailbroken iPhones have security holes.
