The current leader is (and has always been) Research In Motion. RIM has dominated the smartphone market with its Blackberry line of products, with Windows Mobile occupying a distant but respectable second place. But according to stats by Fierce Developer, the iPhone surpassed Microsoft’s number of active users last October.
Right now Microsoft has 1,000 people working on Windows Mobile 7, which is slated for release late next year. Microsoft is also set to talk about Windows Mobile 7 next March at the MIX 2010 conference, but with news like this, we’ll probably be hearing from Microsoft a bit sooner.
Should be interesting to see what Microsoft will do after this, since they’ve been pretty quiet about Windows Mobile 7 since September. With exciting new developments on the iPhone’s side — including the possibility of a 64GB model — Microsoft will be pressed to come out with something BIG.

Don’t forget that comScore’s statistics look at the current installed base of users, not new handset sales.
When you look at new sales, you find that Blackberry is still the leader in business, but iPhone has risen up to second place, and Windows Mobile third in the enterprise.
In overall new handset sales, Windows Mobile has only a 7.9% share (Gartner), pushing it down to 4th place. The Windows Mobile platform is basically finished and dead, as most of the commentators and analysts are now saying.
