Mobile phone carrier Wind Mobile will commence operations within the Vancouver area starting tomorrow, June 3rd. This will now be the fifth Canadian city within which Wind Mobile will operate as Vancouver now joins Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and Ottawa, cities that already have service.
As a promotion, users that sign up prior to the end of June will receive a 50% discount from their wireless bill for the first six months of service. In addition to this, there will be no activation fees or 911 charges. Wind Mobile does offer a couple of different service plans including a “Chat” plan, “Always Talk” plan and an “Always Shout” plan. These plans retail for $15, $35 and $45 respectively.
If there is one drawback about this upstarts service, it would be the absence of subsidized mobile devices. Most places do offer a reduced price when mobile users sign a long term service contract with a vendor. This is not the case with Wind Mobile where a BlackBerry Bold 9700 will cost you $450 upfront. If you are looking for a lower cost alternative, there is also the Huawei 1250 which will retail for $70.
