The WiGig Alliance has confirmed the specifications of their WiGig format and as was expected, it’s a significant speed boost over the current 802.11n Wi-Fi standard.
If you’re wondering just how fast the new high speed WiGig format will be, benchmarks estimate it to be over 10 times faster then 802.11n WiFi and best of all, like earlier protocols, it will be backwards compatible, supporting the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands and the 60GHz which is required for full speed.
With the announcement of the WiGig format, the alliance has also put out an early adopter program to encourage hardware developers to design the next generation routers, cards and other devices that are WiGig compatible. It’s very possible that we may see the first WiGig devices begin shipping by the end of this year.
