Western Digital Reveals SiliconEdge Blue SSD

Western Digital has officially entered the solid-state drive market with its newest offering, the SiliconEdge Blue. This is a 2.5-inch SATA II drive that’s primarily designed to improve disk performance for notebook PC’s and gaming desktop machines. So far, we’re liking what we’re seeing.

The SiliconEdge Blue has what it takes to deliver. It’s considerably faster than most SSD’s with a peak read speed of 250MB per second, as well as a peak write speed of 170MB/sec. It also passes the US military standards (810F) when it comes to its resistance to impacts and stresses, making it much more reliable than any rotating drive.

The SiliconEdge Blue also has built-in native command queuing. Windows users will get to enjoy TRIM support, allowing the drive to run at its top speed longer.

The SiliconEdge Blue comes in 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB models, costing $279, $529, and $999 respectively. Western Digital also has a slightly slower offering on the market, the SiliconDrive N1x — although it’s more likely meant for vehicles and servers instead of personal computers, since there hasn’t been a public price announced for it yet.
