When you’ve been fiddling with your touchscreen mobile device for a while now, you’d probably be a little surprised to realize that there are still parts of the world where mobile phones still cost an arm and a leg. And Vodafone is looking to tap into this market with one of its Mobile World Congress launchings — the Vodafone 150.
The Vodafone 150 targets emerging markets in the world, where people are still getting used to texting and making mobile calls. It’s nothing fancy at all — the green screen may remind you of the Nokias we all used to own back in the 90′s. But it’s hard not to smile at the idea that it costs only US$15.
The Vodafone 150 is probably as bare-bones as you can get with a mobile phone. If you want a little extra, such as a color screen and FM radio, then you can choose to get a Vodafone 250 instead. The cost? US$25.
Naturally, these phones will roll out in developing countries before it tests other markets such as the UK and the US which are more accustomed to cellular technology. When it does, though, we have the feeling it’s going to be subsidized by carriers and end up even cheaper.
