VMware has been bringing the possibility of running two or more operating systems on PC’s, and are now looking to expand the capability to smartphones. That means that we may be seeing iPhones running Androids one day (unless, of course, Apple steps in the way yet again).
But smartphones won’t just be dual-booting — VMware is looking to make two mobile operating systems running at the same time, and you’ll be switching between the two profiles with a mere click of a button. That means you could set up a “home” and a “work” profile and have both live at the same time, letting you take calls on either profile.
VMware has shown that the concept is very doable. They’ve already experimented on a last-generation smartphone with 128MB of RAM, and have shown that the device can run Windows Mobile and Android at the same time. The first dual-OS smartphone may need to have at least 256MB RAM, but VMware believes smatphone hardware won’t be an issue.
VMware knows for a fact that the smartphone market is set to balloon over the next five years, selling more than twice the number of PC’s sold each year by 2014.
