Applidium is the software company that was responsible for porting the highly popular VLC media player to the Apple iPad and now, the firm has confirmed that there is a universal iOS version currently under review by the folks at Apple.
There is some expectation that their submission just needs a rubber stamp and will be approved rather quickly. What this means is that in addition to the VLC media player being available through the app store for iPad users, it should soon be avalable for both iPhone and iPod Touch users as well.
What VLC brings to the table is support for media file formats that QuickTime is unable to handle. In fact, mobile users were so interested in having access to VLC on their Apple devices that jailbroken devices have had access to an unofficial port for almost two years now. With the official VLC version, iPhone and iPod Touch users will soon enjoy access to a new version that will come with bug fixes and new features that were previously not available in the iPad only version.
If you are interested in downloading VLC, you will need to ensure that you have an iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS or the same generation iPod Touch. There is no support for older models because they do not have the processing power for 720p videos.
