Verizon is adding a new smartphone to its lineup next week on April 28th. At a cost of $300 with a two year service agreement, customers will now be able to choose the Samsung Droid Charge, which is their first LTE 4G mobile phone to come on the market.
Probably the biggest eye opener with this phone would have to be the price tag. At $300, it sets a new price level for smartphones because most mobile phones to date have been around $200 or cheaper. As to why consumers are expected to pay so much for this phone may simply be due to the fact that it is a 4G service. This isn’t the first time that Verizon has set premium pricing for a 4G LTE phone as we saw the same thing happen when the mobile carrier launched the HTC Thunderbolt at a price of $250, thereby breaking the $200 price point.
In terms of the features for the Droid Charge, it is pretty much on par with the other mobile phones that are available today. The Charge comes with a 1GHz CPU, though it is not dual core. There are also two cameras, a front facing 1.3MP camera and an 8MP rear facing camera. The phone also has a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED plus display screen and comes standard with the Google Android 2.2 operating system.
If you’re still on the fence about this phone, you may want to ask yourself if you use mobile hotspots regularly because Verizon has confirmed that they will have a hotspot feature that will allow mobile users to network up to 10 different devices through this smartphone’s 4G network connection. This will be a free service for a limited period time. Generally, Verizon charges $20/month for this service.
