Verizon Wireless To Support 3G Skype Calls

A new partnership has been forged between Verizon Wireless and Skype which looks like it will have significant positive impact for Verizon customers. The new deal allows Verizon mobile users to be able to make unlimited 3G Skype to Skype voice calls to other Skye users that can be located anywhere in the world.

Additional enhancements that Verizon customers will enjoy include the ability to make international long distance phone calls using the Skype Out feature, thereby being able to take advantage of Skype’s lower fees. 3G instant messaging as well as the ability to see the online status of friends and family will also be made available.

Details of the financial arrangements between the two companies was not disclosed. However, one would have to believe that a certain degree of revenue sharing would have to be involved to compensate Verizon for the lost revenue they would incur due to the increased volume of Skype calls being generated.

Verizon customers will be able to take advantage of the new features and at the same time, reduce their mobile phone bills starting this March. Initially, the roll-out of the new features will be limited to select handsets, namely the BlackBerry 9530, BlackBerry 8530, BlackBerry 9550, BlackBery 9630, Motorola Droid and the Motorola Droid Eris.

With time, it’s expected that even more handsets will be covered under this Skype plan.
