Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) and the search engine giant Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) are holding discussions to develop a tablet computer that would have the ability to compete with the Apple iPad for the lucrative tablet market.

Talks are still in the early stage, but what has been revealed so far is that the new tablet would be powered by the Google Android operating system. Marquett Smith, a Verizon spokesperson, added that further information regarding this new venture should be available later this week. Google was also prompted for further details, but additional information was not forthcoming with Google commenting that “We look forward to seeing what contributions are made and how an open platform spurs innovation.”
