During the first 40 days in which the Apple iPhone was available for purchase in China, Unicom saw 100,000 mobile devices sold. Unicom CEO referenced this milestone as the “iPhone has been a great success and we are very pleased with the response from Chinese consumers.”
The question is how successful was the iPhone launch in the worlds largest wireless market of which Unicom has some 144 million mobile subscribers? According to some analysts, this number is somewhat disappointing and will do nothing to help with the bottom line. To put it into perspective, South Korea, which is a much smaller market saw 60,000 units pre-ordered while the US saw 270,000 iPhone units sold in the first 30 hours back in 2007.
