Corning Inc. is a company whose focus is on specialty glass manufacturing. One of its products is Gorilla Glass which is described as an unbreakable glass that has been developed for LCD TV sets. Though it is available, TV manufacturers have been slow to integrate Gorilla Glass into their LCD panels but this is about to change.
Corning Inc. has confirmed that they will be significantly expanding their production of this product and the expectation is that they will announce their first partnership this fall. The biggest advantage of utilizing Gorilla Glass for LCD display panels is that it offers durability, scratch resistance and the opportunity of eliminating the plastic bezels which prevent the possibility of an edge to edge glass surface. Of course, these advantages do come at a cost which is estimated to increase the price of a panel by $60. However, with companies having a variety of models of LCD panels that each offer different features and benefits, perhaps there would be a niche group of users that would be interested in a rugged panel.
If only these types of panels were available when the Nintendo Wii first came out without the wrist straps for the Wiimotes.
