The London Ultrasound Centre is offering expectant mothers the opportunity to immortalize the image of their unborn baby in a 3D bronze model.

The process makes use of readily available fetal ultrasound pictures which are fed into a 3D printer to complete the 3D model. Total cost of process which takes 2 1/2 weeks to complete is approximately $1650.

Currently, the process allows expectant parents to “celebrate” their unborn baby while still in the womb. As Peter Demetris from the clinic said “‘We also have had parents whose babies have genetic conditions which means they may not survive. Having a memento of their child helps with the bereavement process.”

The pregnancy clinic advised that there are a number of uses for this piece of new medical technology. For instance, an accurate 3D cast of a congenital defect prior to surgery could significantly improve survival rates for sick babies.
