Ultra Thin Frameless Acer Notebook Being Developed

Acer is looking to take notebook technology to a new level with a prototype design that is currently in the works. The new design is certainly a move away from the traditional laptop form factor and is expected to include a touch keyboard but more importantly, will be ultra thin due to some significant structural changes.

These days, hardware manufacturers are aware that consumers are looking for highly portable notebooks and with that in mind, notebook designs are generally quite thin. Acer will look to make them even thinner with it’s new frameless design which if everything goes according to plan would be available in Q2 2010.

The new design would use specially adapted Corning’s reinforced glass substrate with printed color on its rear surface to act as the notebook cover. For Acer, the value comes in form of savings in materials used and the hope would be that at least a portion of these savings would be passed on to the consumer in the form of cheaper notebooks. At the very least though, consumers would have access to a new level of portability both in terms of size and weight with a frameless Acer notebook. We’ll see how this story develops in the coming months and will report back on any hardware specifications once they become available.
