Twitter Passes 20 Billion Tweets

Over the weekend, Twitter reached yet another milestone in its young life. This time, the social networking site passed the 20 billionth tweet milestone on Saturday. Officially, the landmark tweet belongs to the Twitter account @GGGGGGo_Lets_Go which is the account of a Tokyo graphics designer.

The tweet which can be seen here, roughly translates into “So that means the barrage might come back later all at once.” Twitter opened its doors in 2006 and has been an instant phenomena that has made the search engines sit up and take notice with its real time updates. It has also drawn the attention of the White House, representatives of which last year had asked Twitter to delay a scheduled site update so as to allow anti-government protesters in Iran to voice their sentiments over the Internet.

It took Twitter just 5 months to reach the 20 billion mark as it was only in early March when the site celebrated the 10 billion milestone. There have been a number of events like the FIFA World Cup Of Soccer that have boosted the number of Tweets in the last couple months. According to some estimates, Twitter receives over 700 tweets per second and during some of the World Cup soccer matches this year, the tweets spiked to over 3,300 tweets per second.
