Trapdoor Checkers -- Giving An Old Game New Tricks

Virtually everyone knows how to play checkers — it’s a simple enough game. But with video games becoming more and more available these days, board games simply don’t have the same appeal anymore. But Trapdoor Checkers brings a new angle to the classic game that just might make it a little more interesting.

Trapdoor Checkers is basically what the name says — it’s checkers with trapdoors. The checker board has, aside from the usual black and white squares, four orange and four yellow squares. These specially-colored squares can be manipulated by the players to open into trapdoors, and any piece on those squares suffer a James Bond-like predicament.

At the beginning of each player’s turn, they spin to see whether they move a piece, open a trapdoor, or close one. It’s obviously a shot in the arm when you see an opponent’s piece fall through a trapdoor you opened, but the trapdoors do add a new strategic angle to the game.

It’s an interesting concept that might find its way to other board games in the future. I’ll leave that up to your imagination, but playing Monopoly with trapdoors sounds kinda cool… anyway, Goliath Games sells Trapdoor Checkers for a reasonable $29.99.
