3D holographic projections have always been interesting device, playing with the spatial senses of your mind. When you see one of these cool projections, there’s a natural tendency to reach out and touch it (think 3D movies), only to find that your hand goes through the image.
Scientists at the University of Tokyo are working on a new 3-dimensional projector that not only displays virtual objects, but adds a degree of tactile stimulation.
The new technology makes use of a Halo display, a pair of Wii remote controls and an Airborne Ultrasound Tactile Display. Essentially, a virtual object is created on the display while the Wii remotes track the position of the users bare hands.
When the hands are in the position of the virtual object, ultrasonic waves are directed towards the users hands to give them a feeling that the object has physical mass.
Although this technology is still in it’s infancy, further development could result in it having a profound effect in all areas of life such as 3D CAD, medicine and not to forget high end 3D games.
