Toshiba has recently announced that they’ll be launching new SSD modules that use the Toshiba 32nm MLC NAND flash, also known as the Toshiba SG2 modules. The new modules will come in two forms – one is based on the mSATA interface standard, while the other relies on a SATA connector. Coming in 30 and 62GB modules, the drives are set to be mass-produced beginning next month.
What’s great about the new modules is their size – they’re hardly any larger than a standard business card. Compared to the larger traditional SSD’s, the new modules can open the door to better design flexibility in future PC’s. The 62GB module has only a seventh of the volume and an eighth of the weight of a 2.5″ SSD, and uses up only half the power.
But while small, the new SSD’s are still quite powerful – interface speeds can hit 3Gbps, a top sequential read speed of 180MB/s and a top sequential write speed of 70MB/s. The new SSD’s may very well make their way to notebooks, netbooks and portable electronic devices. The mini-SATA types, in particular, are seen to be a hit with the netbook market over the next several months.
