Ever wondered why iPod Touches have twice the storage space of iPhones, despite their skinnier form factor? The answer is space — the Touch has space for two Toshiba embedded NAND flash memory chips, while the iPhone has only one. That doesn’t mean we’re stuck with this limited storage space, though — Toshiba has recently unveiled a new NAND flash memory chip, this time holding up to a whopping 64GB of data.
Of course that doesn’t mean much until Apple thinks about buying these chips for their new devices, but it does open the doors to a new 64GB iPhone model (and 128GB iPod Touches, oh joy). As yet there’s still no news on pricing, but that may change very soon.
Right now the buzz on the rumor mill is that since new iPhones get released in the summer and new iPods in the fall, Apple may once again take their time upgrading to the new chips. But if Apple goes through with the much-awaited camera-equipped iPod Touch, the additional storage would be a very welcome New Year’s gift.
