It’s been a long time coming, but it looks like the iPhone and the iPod Touch will be getting a new radio app, letting users listen to music from their favorite Internet radio stations. Yup, still a rumor at this point, but there seems no good reason why Apple won’t come out with such an App.
The 5th generation iPod nano already has such a feature, and it’s one of its biggest selling points. It’s easy to think that Apple’s been holding back the radio app for the iPhone and iPod Touch just so it won’t cannibalize itself, but if this radio app will let users buy music from the iTunes music store once they hear it on the radio, it should boost iTunes sales tremendously.
A lot of people think it’s Apple’s way of asserting its dominance in the portable media player market, since Microsoft’s Zune HD already has a radio feature. Of course, no one likes the idea of Microsoft one-upping iPods, so… this will probably be Apple’s answer.
Of course, there isn’t any more details on the App available yet, but it’s likely to come out before Zune and other portable media players get too popular on the radio front.
