The Burning Man

Most cities I know just take all their garbage, throw it into a landfill which in turn becomes a food source for the local animal population. No so when it comes to the residents of Margate. As a project in the summer of 2006, the residents, with the help of the Thanet waste disposal services collected 30 tonnes of waste over a six week period and built a statue of a person with one hand in the air.

This was then set ablaze. Total burn time for this statue was just 32 minutes and it was noted that sparks from the burning statue showered the spectators below. Fortunately, what they didn’t burn was rotten food or other material that has a fragrance as that would have been just nasty. The fuel for this statue consisted of beds, tables, dining chairs, toilet seats, desks, pianos and other similar items.

When I first saw this series of pictures, from a distance, I thought it looked like an effigy of Michael Jackson raising his hand. Anyone remember when Michael released one of later albums and as part of that promotion, he floated a statue of himself down the River Thames?
