GPS enabled shoes - The Ambulator

GTX Corp and Aetrex Worldwide have teamed up and created a shoe embedded with Global Positioning System (GPS) technology called the Ambulator. It not uncommon for people with dementia and other cognitive disorders that involve memory loss to wonder off and subsequently forget where they are going. With the Ambulator, concerned family members can track the whereabouts of their loved ones who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease, by connecting to the private tracking website. This technology would also well in hospitals where it is common for dementia patients to wonder off and get lost in the big buildings.

The GPS system is concealed within the shoe to prevent the paranoid patient from tearing the hidden device out in fear of being followed. People with dementia tend to retain their habitual memory, so they are more likely to put on their shoes before wondering off.

The Ambulator will be available next spring. Pricing will be between $200-$300 depending upon features. There will also be a monthly monitoring charge of $18. Patrick Bertagna, the chief executive states that some costs may be reimbursed by Medicare.
