In 2010, Telus Mobility had officially confirmed that early in the New Year, they would begin to unlock mobile devices as a fee based service. Well, that time has come and information about the new service has now been made available.
Effective February 15th, Telus will unlock phones at a price of $50 per device. As part of their service, Telus will provide full instructions on how to unlock your phone and will also offer up a list of mobile devices that are eligible for unlocking. Unfortunately, those wondering if the Apple iPhone 4 will be on the list, will be sad to hear that the Apple smartphone will not be a supported device for unlocking. Regardless of the device that you own, once you have unlocked it, you will still need to finish out your contract with Telus unless you are willing to pony up the cancellation fee.
In this regards, Brent Johnson, on behalf of Telus offered the following comments:
If people want to get a subsidy they can get a locked-in contract but they don’t have to have a locked-in phone… It gives people greater flexibility for instances where, for example, they are at the end of a contract and they want to give their phone to someone else, that phone would work on any network including Telus. If you are travelling internationally, perhaps going to Europe for an extended period of time you can unlock your phone and buy a prepaid SIM card from a local carrier and enjoy local rates when you are travelling.
