In this era that we live in where satellites can zoom in on objects as small as a license plate, it doesn’t seem unreal that scientists at the University of California are working on a technology that will allow the owners of this software duplicate a set of keys without being in physical possession of them.
This process known as Teleduplication allows people to recreate a set of keys from just a picture. Stefan Savage, the project lead summed it up as “We built our key duplication software system to show people that their keys are not inherently secret. Perhaps this was once a reasonable assumption, but advances in digital imaging and optics have made it easy to duplicate someone’s keys from a distance without them even noticing.”
