DriveSmart Plus is an Android app that has been jointly developed by T-Mobile and Location Labs. The focus of this app is to stop texting while driving.
When DriveSmart Plus is installed on an Android phone, it will monitor your mobile device and when the app determines that it is travelling at “car-like speeds”, it will automatically place the phone into a “Driver Mode”.
Once a phone has been placed in this mode, all incoming text messages will receive an auto reply stating “I’m driving!”. At the same time, the app will also accept all incoming phone calls and forward them to a Bluetooth device. In the event of an emergency, there is a way to override the settings, but in doing so, an email will be sent to the person who installed DriveSmart letting them know the situation. This app is thus being promoted to parents as a way to play big brother over their children to ensure that they don’t text while drive.
If you like this app, it will set you back a few dollars each month as T-Mobile will charge $4.99 per month. Currently the app is also only available on the Optimus T. The only question is, how long do you think it will take some smart teens to figure out how to disable this feature and then post the solution on a social networking site somewhere so that everyone can disable it?
