Corneal disease results in poor vision and is one of the most common causes of blindness.
A medical breakthrough for this degenerative disease was recently announced by scientists at the University of New South Wales.
The process involves stem cell therapy whereby stem cells are taken from the patient’s eyes and grown onto contact lenses in a clinical lab. Once ready, the lenses are then worn by the patient for a period of three weeks. During this time, the human stem cells migrate from the lens to the damaged eyes and begin the repair process.
According to doctors, the process is quite simple and inexpensive which is a plus for the medical system. For patient’s, using stem cells from their own body means that there is no reliance on organ donors or risk of tissue rejection.
