George Lucas and company have to count their blessing that R2 D2 was a robot rather then a humanoid because this is one of the most popular characters of the Star Wars saga. With his popularity, R2 D2 has lent his name and likeness to everything from bedsheets, figurines, books and every other assorted gadget you could probably think of. Just imagine the royalties that Lucas would have had to handout!
In Star Wars, episode 4, one of the more memorable scenes was with R2 D2 delivering his message of a holographic Princess Leia to Obi Wan Kenobi. The Star Wars R2 D2 Projection Alarm Clock recreates this famous scene but without Princess Leia. This alarm clock uses projection technology to display the current time on the wall.

Understandably, projection technology works best in a darker room, hence this clock works better at night. During the day, you can still view the time on an LCD screen.
If you’re interested in this gadget, you’ll have to wait until October 2008 as that is when UK toy manufacturer Wesco Limited will release them. Initially, these will only be available in the UK, but like other gadgets, I’m sure it’ll make it’s way to the world market.
