Sprint recently announced the launch of Overdrive, their new dual-mode 3G/4G portable hotspot. Built with Sierra Wireless technology, the small hotspot can be yours for $100, with a two-year lock-in period at $60 a month.
Overdrive, which can fit nicely in your pocket, has all the trappings of popular portable hotspots that came before it, and then some. Some of its upgrades include a B&W LCD panel, a microSD slot, and a micro-USB port. That means the Overdrive can serve as a small file server in addition to a modem and router.
The Overdrive can operate at a 150-foot range and last 3-4 hours on battery power. The battery life doesn’t shorten the more users are connected — 5 users, the device’s maximum, will use up the same power as only one. But what’s great about the Overdrive is that a Web-based performance manager can let you shorten the device’s range a bit to improve battery life.
The Overdrive will be available this Sunday (Jan 10) in ten Sprint 4G/Clear-enabled markets. Ground Zero will be Atlanta, Georgia.
