Bad news for HTC Evo 4G owners as the over the air update that was initiated by Sprint yesterday has now been suspended. The reason for the suspension was the number of customer complaints reporting that the OTA update was causing their Android handset to brick.
The failure to update was being seen not just with rooted or modified devices, but also from customers that had a pristine device. Sprint had already acknowledged in yesterday’s blog post that rooted handsets would not be able to receive the update, but the number of reports from owners of non-rooted devices has caused Sprint and HTC to step back and investigate this issue. The issue was serious enough for then to pull back on the update and it’s not entirely clear at this time what will be the process for those users who ended up with a brick after this update.
The official statement from Sprint is below:
While the vast majority of consumers successfully downloaded and installed the most recent HTC EVO 4G software update, we have received a handful of reports from customers having some issues with the update. In light of this, HTC and Sprint have decided to temporarily halt distribution of this software release until we can investigate further. We expect to be able to resume software updates shortly.
