Sprint Unlimited Data/Voice plan

There’s currently quite a bit to gripe about with the mobile phone industry today, what with ridiculously-priced plans and poor network coverage plaguing the performance of otherwise great smartphones. Case in point — Apple’s iPhone. The cheapest plan you can get with it is the $85 one, with 200 text messages, 550 minutes of talk time, choppy 3G connections, and no MMS.

Compare it with Sprint’s new unlimited data/voice plan. For $69, you get unlimited web surfing, unlimited text, video, and picture, unlimited Direct Connect, unlimited Blackberry access, and unlimited weekend minutes starting at 7pm. This new deal makes all others look like ripoffs.

Of course, there are still some potential drawbacks to this plan. For instance, it doesn’t mention any unlimited offering when calling landline numbers, so doing so might cost you extra. Same goes for roaming and it’s a well-known fact that Sprint’s coverage isn’t exactly the best in the business.

Still, the thought that Sprint was able to offer an incredibly audacious plan to undercut the entire mobile phone industry is encouraging. If Sprint promotes it enough and follows through on its promises, then it could signal an entire shift in the industry, one that drives down costs for consumers and make the airwaves more “public domain” than ever before.
