Sony has unveiled the new Playstation 3 Slim, a slimmer, lighter version of the original Playstation 3. The PS3 hasn’t been doing as well as Sony had hoped and the PS3 Slim’s price tag and upgrades are an attempt to reclaim ground lost to the Nintendo Wii and the XBox 360.
The PS3 Slim uses a new Cell microprocessor, developed jointly by Sony, IBM, and Toshiba. The new microprocessor is touted to have many performance advantages over the previous chips used for older PS3 consoles, although IBM came short of really saying what the PS3 Slim’s clock speed was going to be.
According to Sony, the new chip manufacturing process employed by the PS3 Slim was a factor in driving the console’s price down. With further advancements in the technology, we may be seeing even more cost-effective and energy-efficient consoles from Sony down the line.
The PS3 Slim also comes with a 120GB hard drive, another upgrade from older 80GB PS3’s. The PS3 Slim will land on market shelves on September 1, and will sell for US$299. The PS3 slim will have the same graphics card architecture as older PS3 consoles, so your PS3 games will play on Slims just fine.
