Sony Japan has confirmed that they will no longer be making 3.5-inch floppy disks within Japan by March 2011 and the reason given was low demand. No surprise here as the 1.44MB floppy disk has been replaced by much larger storage devices including CDs, DVDs, flash drives and portable external hard drives.
Surprisingly, Sony managed to sell 8.5 million floppy disks last year within Japan, but this is significantly lower then the 47 million that were sold back in 2000. Japan still accounts for 70% of worldwide sales and this may have been part of the reason why Sony delayed the cancellation of production as it did in other parts of the world back in 2009.
