Digital 3D technology has already made mainstream in the movie industry – in only three years, its uptake has increased nine times over. It’s expected that 7,000 movie theaters around the world will be fitted with digital 3D screens by the end of the year. But where does the digital 3D revolution leave the other half of the population, who’d much rather watch movies at home?
Sony to the rescue. Sony has thrown its full weight behind the development of digital 3D for home televisions. This means it’s much more likely to see digital 3D satellite channels now than ever before.
There’s still the big question, though – will the equipment to properly deliver digital 3D for homes be available soon enough? There’s more than one way to display digital 3D, and the big names in the industry are nowhere near coming up with an international standard.
Still, Sony’s decision to spearhead the move to 3D TV is still a step in the right direction, and sends a very optimistic message to other players in the 3D industry. With Sony as its pillar of strength, 3D seems to be making its debut in homes much, much sooner than expected.
