Amazon may need to come out with a repackaged Kindle soon, as Sony’s two new E-book readers may eat into some considerable market share if left unchecked. The Sony Reader Pocket (PRS-300) and Sony Reader Touch (PRS-600) will hit market shelves in a few weeks at $200 and $300 each, way cheaper than existing Kindle models.
One of Kindle’s major drawbacks was the price, as evidenced by the reluctance of many Amazon fans to invest in the Kindle series. Amazon’s flagship Kindle 2 costs $300, while the larger-screened Kindle DX sells for $490.
Sony’s offerings aren’t shabby at all — the Sony Reader Pocket comes in blue, rose, and silver, and stores up to 350 standard e-books. The Sony Reader Touch lets users make scribbles using stylus pens, as well as use an onscreen virtual keyboard to type. All notes can then be exported and printed, too.
The only drawback of Sony’s e-readers is that they don’t have any wireless connectivity, but that’s something many users can certainly live with. It’ll be interesting to see the device that Amazon will come up with to counter Sony’s spirited challenge.
