Sony EReader Daily Edition

The Amazon Kindle has been the market leader in ebook readers, but nipping at their heels is Sony with the release of their new ebook reader called the Daily Edition.

Expected to go on sale this December, the Daily Edition includes a 7-inch touchscreen display capable of either landscape or portrait mode. In terms of connectivity, this device uses the high speed mobile network known as 3G GSM connectivity. The advantages of 3G wireless connectivity are multitude including supporting a global industry standard as well as directly competing with the Kindle by allowing consumers to wirelessly download ebooks and magazines.

Priced at $399, the Daily Edition has a storage capacity capable of holding up to 1000 books and also includes a software application that allows users to “checkout free ebooks” from local libraries for up to 21 days. The best part about this new software application is there are no longer any late fees incurred as “at the end of the library’s lending period, e-books simply expire”.

With this announcement, Sony has also indicated that they will announce deals with local and national newspapers later this year.
