Despite the recent heavy losses, Tony Bartel, GameStop executive vice president remains optimistic about the future of the Sony PS3. After the price drop and the introduction of the PS3 slim, the September sales figures were “very strong,” with almost half a million game consoles being sold in the US alone. Sales in Japan were also brisk with Sony seeing a significant 707% increase in sales after the price cuts went into effect.
Although the September results were highly positive, financial analysts question just how long the increased sales will last. Sony faces strong competition in the gaming world from both Microsoft that announced deep discounts for the Xbox 360 Elite as well as from Nintendo who also dropped the price of their Wii consoles.
It will be interesting to see the final sales figures for the month of October once we have the official NPD results, but again, Bartel is quite positive, stating that “we still see PS3 sales as very strong through October as well.”
