Sony Playstation 4 Without Cell Processor

Sony Playstation 4 Without Cell Processor

Details are starting to emerge about Sony’s next generation gaming console, the Playstation 4 (PS4). Sony is still looking at a number of options in regards to this console design and has considered using a modified cell processor architecture along with Intel’s Larrabee chipset. However, it’s believed that this solution has a couple of drawbacks including not having enough processor power to run the next generation video games as well as not being the most third party developer friendly solution.

As such, it’s believed that Sony may move away from the cell processor architecture altogether and go with a more traditional multi-core processor to power their PS4 game console. At a minimum, we’re still at least 2 years away before the PS4 sees the light of day as that is the least amount of time needed for a console to go from concept design to production. However, there’s no doubt that 2010 will bring more insight into Sony’s plan for the PS4.
