Sony Dash

At first, we all thought that Tablets — of which Apple, Microsoft, Google and Dell are rumored to be in production of — were devices halfway between smartphones and netbooks. But the Sony Dash may be coming up with its own kind of device — halfway between portable media players and tablets. It’s interesting, if not unusual.

The Sony Dash is a 7-inch touchscreen device that, not unlike the Chumby that came before it, offers Internet services, streaming entertainment, and give you news about the weather, among many other things. It comes with Wi-Fi support, stereo speakers, Wi-Fi access, and access to the Internet video platform for Sony’s Bravia (hosted by YouTube and Pandora).

The Sony Dash also has access to the Chumby app library, which has about 1,000 Apps all in all. It’s likely that the Dash and Chumby will have some cross-connecting functionality.

Whether the Sony Dash catches on remains to be seen — it does seem to be on shaky ground, trying to scratch out a niche of its own. If it does pick up, though, it’s likely the other digital entertainment companies will be dashing into things pretty soon.

Interested? The Sony Dash will set you back a reasonable US$200.
