Sony 3D Glasses Get Priced

Sony Electronics has confirmed the pricing for their 3D glasses as well as the infrared emitters. Hold on to your seat, a 3D upgrade package will run about $587 for a family of four. That’s a large sum of cash, especially if you are planning on buying latest 3D Sony television. Although Sony has just revealed their pricing, we had an inkling that it would be in this ballpark as the Samsung 3D HDTV glasses that were announced at the end of February were priced very similarly.

The emitter itself will go for about $55 while the TDG-BR100 and TDG-BR50 active shutter glasses are $133 individually. If you’re planning to purchase the Sony LX900 television that starts at the base price of $3900, you will receive a pair of “free” 3D glasses. The list price is not cheap but most of these companies are probably banking on 3D movies like Avatar to drive sales, that is of course unless you are in Korea and want to be treated to a 4D movie experience.

All kidding aside, TV manufacturers are in a unique position, at least for now where they can make money and significant sums of it with their peripheral devices. We can only hope that this is a temporary position or we could be faced with high prices similar to what we have seen with toner cartridges in the print industry for years now.
