Solar Powered Traffic Light

Green gadgets are popping up everywhere these days from electric cars to solar powered cell phones. The limits of how solar technology can be incorporated into new products seems only limited by our imagination.

It’s nice to see that the street level traffic lights are getting a second look by adding a solar panel to them. This concept idea was designed by Cheng-Tsung Feng, Yao-Chieh Lin and Bo-Jin Wang, all of whom won the silver level international Lite-On Award.

The new traffic lights use a discolor LED (Light Emitting Diode) that allows red, green and yellow colors to occupy just a single space rather then requiring three separate spaces. You have to wonder when we’ll start to see city councils request this idea be developed further because of it’s energy savings as well as the savings in material costs that will be gained by reducing the size of the signal lights themselves.
