The old Pacific Ferris Wheel at the Santa Monica peer shutdown for the final time on May 5th and was dismantled to make room for the new bright and shiny solar powered LED lit ferris wheel. The new ferris wheel lights up the neighborhood sky with an impressive 160,000 LED lights.
With that many lights, you would think that electricity bills would be sky high. However, this 90 foot high ride that will provide thrills for up to 800 passengers per hour will use solar panels for clean energy and the LED lights are expected to reduce power consumption.
The Pacific Wheel was tourist attraction at the Santa Monica pier, having made it in movies such as A Night at the Roxbury, Titanic, and Thank You for Smoking. Although the Pacific Ferris Wheel didn’t even last ten years, being originally erected in 1996, it’s nice to see it’s not going to end up as scrap metal as it was recently sold on Ebay auction for $130,000 to the Oklahoma City real-estate developer, Grant Humphreys, who plans to incorporate the Ferris Wheel in a mixed use residential community.
