I’ve always admired Apple for their creativity, ingenuity, and their ability to think outside of the box. Many of their products such as the iPod, and iphone have revolutionized gadgets and have paved the way for other companies to come out with similar products of their own.
Never to sit back on their past accomplishments, a patent application has been filed by Apple to introduce solar power in their popular line up of products such as the iPod and iPhone. Solar power would certainly be a huge benefit and Apple is not the first company to consider such a power solution as Motorola had tried to introduce solar power into their line of products back in 2001.
What holds solar power back in hand held devices is the footprint. By design, hand held devices are meant to be small, compact and portable. Introducing solar power would result in the need of solar cells which would increase the size of the device, which in turn may put some people off.
With their latest patent, Apple is looking into the prospect of placing these solar cells behind the LCD screen thereby not affecting the size of the product in any way, yet being able to charge itself with light that passes through the LCD display.
This would certainly be an advantage for consumers if this works, and lets give Apple a hand for at least trying.
