SK Telecom offers ringtones to repel mosquitoes

Over the past few months, we’ve seen quite a few different ringtones. There’s the ones that are used by convenience stores to prevent kids from loitering outside the entrance of their store. These ringtones work because they play an irritating sound heard in a frequency range that most adults cannot hear. Over time, these same ringtones were adopted by kids and placed on their cell phones so that they could communicate in class using the same premise that adults, or in this case teachers cannot hear the ringtones.
South Korea (SK) Telecom is now offering their subscribers, an opportunity to purchase a ringtone which humans cannot hear, but will annoy mosquitoes within a range of 1 meter. The sound is similar to a male mosquito, which causes the blood sucking female mosquitoes to leave the area.
This is expected to be quite popular in Korea, a country that has hot and humid summers, good breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
